Trending jobs will require more education | SimplyGreater.org

As employment increases throughout the nation, a college degree is becoming increasingly important. During the 2012-2022 decade, employment is projected to grow by 15.6 million jobs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 19 of the 30 occupations that are projected to grow fastest require some form of postsecondary education. Over the next eight years, employment requiring an associate degree will increase by 17.6 percent, a bachelor’s degree by 12.1 percent, a master’s degree by 18.4 percent and a doctorate degree by 16 percent.

Some of the top jobs that are expected to expand over the next decade are in the health, computer science and education sectors – and they all require some form of higher education.

Health occupations

Healthcare jobs are “trending” right now, but they’re not just a fad. As the nation’s population ages, occupations such as registered nurses, medical assistants, diagnostic medical sonographers and physical therapists are becoming more and more sought after.

The fastest growing occupations are concentrated in the health care and social assistance sector, which is expected to add 5 million jobs by 2022.

Computer science occupations

As our world becomes heavily more reliant on technology, computer-related occupations are expected to experience high growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those jobs include software developers and programmers, computer systems analysts, and network and computer systems administrators.

Computer and mathematical occupations are expected to grow by 18 percent, which is faster than average. By 2022, this sector is expected to yield more than 1.3 million job openings.

Education occupations

Many people believe teaching can be one of the most important jobs in the world because of the impact they can make on young students. Teachers are always needed across all ages, from preschool, elementary, middle school, high school and college.

Of jobs that require a bachelor’s degree, elementary school teachers are the second highest in demand, with an increase in jobs by 12.3 percent. Employment of postsecondary teachers, which generally requires a master’s degree, is expected to increase 16.6 percent.
